But the book doesn’t go into the collapse after this and skips forwards 85 years to a point where, after no more natural births bar those from frozen embryos, there are very few people left. It adds almost a spooky feeling as everyone, worldwide, starts to have near simultaneous nose bleeds. The start is excellent beginning right when the virus hits. In The Quiet at the End of the World that age old favourite of a virus has, for a change, not wiped out most of the population. I also like the idea of a quieter world where humans have had less impact on the environment. And yes from my other reviews you’ll have noted I’ve read quite a few of these now! It is a genre I like mainly as I like the idea of people facing up to real issues.
